He was convicted with co-defendants at Bristol Crown Court, who are all from the Bangladeshi minority. The pair were also acquitted of two counts of rape.

Judge Judge Burnett added: “The offences taken together amount to serious sexual offences.

“They were committed with such seriousness that they were only foiled by the good character of each of them.

“These are serious cases. It may be that in such cases, the victim will have to endure more than five years of remand – if that is appropriate.

He also pointed out that none of the suspects have previous convictions for rape.

The judge expressed sympathy for how the suspects were treated last night.

He added: “No-one could deny that this was a despicable and disgusting offence, involving multiple rapes, and it is particularly hard for the victim to bear in mind that the victim of one of the worst acts of sexual attack you have ever seen will lose her young child as a result of the serious sexual offences.”

In sentencing, Judge Burnett said that a child would “lose a child and her mother’s hopes” if the rape had gone on for the whole five-year sentence imposed.

He added he had “heard from many victims who were devastated by what took place in the case.”

Judge Burnett added: “I have to note that no-one has been convicted of or sentenced to prison. You have been told that you have served your entire five-year sentence. The sentences for the remaining rape offences were not served, so those would have been served as part of your present custodial sentence.

“I will be sorry to say that some of the victims have complained that they didn’t get the answers they were looking for in relation to their children and what had happened.

“I’m sorry, if you had not received the child support or the money that you needed you could not have had the help you needed at this point in time.

“You cannot go back and tell that some of the victims you met in court and the girls and their families were misled or made to feel that you were on their level and doing what was in the best interests of the kids. The family that you met can no longer see you as an innocent, if it means it will result in the girls not going through this.”
